Painting a Velociraptor

Velociraptor01I have no idea how Paleontologists know what colour Dinosaurs were.  That said I had no intention of dreaming up my own scheme so I reverted to my tried and trusted resource of “Google” to find out what a Velociraptor might have looked like.

Firstly, I undercoated the figure in black.  As is my want I appiled the paint by brush.

The first coat was Games Workshop Bestial Brown. Following this I dry-brushed these colours on top of one another:  Snakebite Leather (GW); Desert Yellow (Vallejo); Buff (Vallejo) and White. Next step was to line the mouth and paint in those razor sharp teeth. The mouth was painted in Dark Flesh (GW) and the teeth built up from Desert Yellow (Vallow); Buff (Vallejo) and a final highlight of White.

The eyes, to my mind, would be the most important aspect of the figure.  I wanted to get them “right” to convey the evilness of the Velociraptor.  I put down a black shadow round the eyeball and then painted it Red.  I highlighted this with Deep Orange (Vallejo) and then painted in the pupil.  I did this by applying a thin black line down the centre of the eye. Then I highlighted either side in Yellow and final a speck of White to give the impression of light reflecting off the eye.

The pattern on the skin was built up from Japanese Uniform (Vallejo); Russian Uniform Green (Vallejo) and finally US Olive Drab (Vallejo).

Lastly, the claws were painted in black and highlighted with Russian Uniform Green and Khaki.
